Overview
A small hotel where each room has a deep entrance, a place to put your bag down and a window seat worth staying for.
The first two metres
In most hotels the door opens straight into the bed. Here the first two metres of every room are an entrance: a plastered niche, a brass hook, a low shelf and a lamp that switches on as the door opens.
Guests told us later that this is where they feel they have arrived, before they have even looked at the room.
Rooms that are all different
The building is old and none of its rooms are the same size, so we stopped trying to make them match. Each room has one colour of plaster and one window seat, and everything else is shared.
Furniture is made in six small workshops within an hour of the hotel. Linen is washed and pressed in the town, and the bedside lamps were turned in a workshop two streets away.
