Light through an arch

How an arched opening throws light differently from a rectangular one, with photographs.

An arch softens the edge of the light. Where a rectangle throws a hard-edged block onto the floor, an arch throws a shape that rounds off at the top and slowly slides across the room.

What we measured

In the House of Nine Arches we photographed the same room every hour for a day. The arched openings kept the floor lit for about forty minutes longer than square ones would have.

It is not a big difference, but it is the difference people feel when they say a room is warm.
