Why every project starts at the door

We draw the way in before we draw anything else. Here is what that does to a project.

Process

5 min

A bright teal door with ornate details and mailbox

When a new client walks into the studio, the first thing we ask is not what they want. It is where they want to walk in from.

The door tells you the rest

A front door decides how a house is approached, what you see first, where you put your coat and how long it takes to feel at home. It is small, and almost everything else follows from it.

So we sketch the threshold, then the room behind it, then the light in that room, and only then the outside.

What changes for the client

Clients tell us they understand the project sooner. A door is something everyone has an opinion about, and it makes the abstract concrete.
